Symptoms

• Sudden loss of power as the engine enters limp mode

• Visible smoke from under the hood
• Strong smell of diesel fuel

Common Causes

• Burnt, damaged, or shorted wiring and connectors
• Ruptured fuel lines due to rubbing/chafing against engine components or vibration-induced weaknesses
• Split or damaged fuel rails
• Component failure in high-pressure pumps
• Loose connections in high pressure fuel lines
• Damage to return lines

Diagnosis

1. Inspect all wiring associated with the fuel injection system for damage.
2. Perform resistance, reference voltage, and ground checks on all wiring in the system.
3. Check for leaks by cranking the engine and inspecting likely sites such as injectors, fuel rails, regulators, and pressure sensors.
4. Replace high-pressure fuel lines if damaged to prevent recurrence of issues.
